After a near-fatal accident, Lawrence awakens in a hospital, where doctors inform him that at the time of his accident his survival was impossible. His ex-wife, an employee of a cryonics company, had him frozen with the hope that advanced technology might one day save his life. He has now been resuscitated, one hundred and fifty years into the future. All there is to remind him of his past is a diary left to him by his daughter, who was four at the time of his accident, written by her as an adult. But this isn’t enough to console him in a world which, while seemingly familiar on the periphery, lacks the profound human connections he once knew.
Haunted by an unsettling sense of loss and isolation, Lawrence is soon to discover that the benevolent doctors harbour a dark secret. Threatening suicide, he compels them to unveil the truth, setting him on a journey where deception lurks at every turn, and his greatest adversary might be the only person he can trust.
The Frozen Echo (350 pages) is a science fiction novel about a future wherein AI dominates the world. This tightly written psychological thriller reads like a movie, with a sharp, unexpected twist at the end.
Ending wrote the first draft of this book back in the 90s. At the time, she worked as an IT specialist, taking an interest in AI development. The book also echoes Ending’s own experience in trying to find her way in a country where she did not grow up (The Netherlands) and did not know anyone, with alienation being key to the story. The book will be available in English, Spanish and Dutch.
